The Cube is where gem progression starts to feel worth the effort. Once you've collected enough Grand gems, five matching pieces can be merged through Amalgamation into one Horadric version. That single craft can change what a socket does for your build, especially when tougher world tiers begin punishing weak resistances. Players comparing gear paths or browsing D4 items will usually notice that high-grade gems matter just as much as another strong affix.

Start with the right Grand gems

Don't throw every gem into the Cube the moment you get it. Grand Diamonds and Grand Skulls serve very different jobs, so it helps to decide what your character is missing first. A Grand Diamond gives weapons a 20% all-damage multiplier, adds 30 to all stats in armour, and grants 375 resistance to every element in jewellery. A Grand Skull leans towards survival: 24% physical damage in weapons, 22.5% more healing received in armour, and 2,625 physical resistance in jewellery. That's a real choice, not just a higher number.

Using Amalgamation

Open the Horadric Cube, enter Recipes, then choose Item Transmutation and Amalgamation. The recipe is simple, though gathering the materials takes time.

Pick five Grand gems of one exact type.
Place all five into the transmutation grid.
Run the recipe to receive one upgraded Horadric gem.

You can't mix Diamonds with Skulls and expect a useful result. Keep matching stacks together in your stash. It saves a surprising amount of time when you're crafting after a long farming session.

What the upgrade actually changes

A Grand Diamond becomes a Horadric Diamond, a Magic Gem requiring level 30. Its weapon multiplier rises from 20% to 24%, the armour bonus moves from 30 to 40 all stats, and jewellery gets 500 all-element resistance. Skulls make an even sharper jump. Five Grand Skulls produce a Flawless Horadric Skull, a Rare Gem with a 32% physical damage multiplier for weapons, 38% increased healing received for armour, and 4,375 physical resistance for jewellery. If your build relies on healing loops or faces heavy physical hits, you'll feel that difference right away.

Plan sockets around your goal

These gems also carry serious gold value: a Horadric Diamond sells for 75 million, while a Flawless Horadric Skull reaches 500 million. Still, selling one may sting later if your gear needs it. Check each socket, keep your five-gem sets organised, and craft for the problem your character has today. For players weighing upgrades alongside D4 items for sale, that practical approach keeps both damage and defence moving in the right direction.
